Havahart SS-2LGX Battery-Operated Nuisance Animal Intermittent 1 Mile Electric Fence Charger Review
I wanted to protect my patio from raccoons invading my bird feeder. The unit works but has room for improvement.The good: Long battery life (2 Mo's CONTINUOUS operation on 2 D cells (3.0v)).
I tried rechargeable Ni-Mh batteries (2.5 v) and they did work but I could not measure fence voltage and suspect it to be a bit lower because of the half volt difference.
Nice safe all plastic case so you won't get shocked.
Does not kill the animals but feels like a shock from walking across a carpet then touching the door know. Startling, slight snap, but safe.
Pulses on and off (briefly) at one second intervals.
Neon light to show the pulse.
Plus-minus or hi-earth 'screw' terminals are not also banana jacks. (Too bad)
So-so:
The unit emits a slight charge discharge sound. Enough to attract a curious raccoon, who then left it alone.
Comes with a plastic spike that's only used to hold the unit. You must supply a ground rod or run ground wires or both as part of the fence. Wire, ground rod insulators, etc., are NOT included I guess to keep the cost down. You will need them.
It would be nice if the unit could automatically turn on when dark but it doesn't. On-off is a rocker switch. Too bad I can't turn it on remotely or from indoors.
The bad:
(The battery compartment was designed by an idiot.) two heavy D cells are inserted vertically (watching orientation) then a plastic spring loaded bottom must slide into one tiny point and while still holding everything you install the thumbscrew. It's just a dumb design. Lucky I left enough slack in all the wires leading to it I was able to turn it upside down to make battery loading easier BUT even then with the spring loaded clip it's difficult. The spring door should be hinged. So be prepared when it comes time to change batteries. Thankfully it will run for 2 or more Months per set of D cell alkaline.
I made my fence to handle a higher power unit if this one didn't do the job.
So far it seems to be working as needed...
Update: I've gotten nipped by this a couple of times by accident so it's not a killer. I saw a squirrel hop on it and his tail spun like an airplane propeller and he ran away to a tree but there were no limbs close enough for him to hop to my feeder. He's been back and eats whatever the birds drop on the ground but won't touch the electrified pole. There is also a raccoon that used to climb the pole but not behaves like the squirrel. The squirrel visits during the day and the raccoons at night so I leave it on 24/7. Success!
